Antequera is situated 47 km north of the city of Málaga, at the foot of the mountain range of El Torcal and El Arco Calizo Chimenea, The location of the city is impressive, with many remains of ancient walls and a Moorish castle that reaches out on a rocky spur above the city.


In the immediate surroundings of the city, lies the saltwater lagoon Fuente de Piedra, one of the few breeding grounds of the flamingos in Europe.

On the other side of the Guadalhorce River, you'll find the remarkable Peña de los Enamorados ("Rock of Lovers"), named after the legend of a young Christian and Moorish couple that jumped from the rock together, while being chased by Moorish soldiers.

El Torcal de Antequera was declared a nature park on July 18, 1989 , giving it special protection.

The main attractions of Antequera are: many beautiful churches, the 18th-century Palace of Nájera, the bullring, the dolmen, the Alcazaba, the "Arco de los gigantes".
